MUSINGS ON FIVE” - Dora Levakis
An exhibition focussing on the number five; being half-way to, or from, somewhere.
There are five components to this show:
1. Portraits on canvas of women, aged mid-decade, unadorned, painted with the aim that their faces evoke who they are.
2. Portrait of a woman, mid-century.
3. Icons paintings of each woman, this time representing them as they wish to be publicly identified.
4. Interview footage of each woman painted - ‘Do they feel closer to from where they’ve come or to where they think they are going? … What does the number 5 mean or evoke for them? … What do they know an icon to be? … What does it mean to be mid somewhere? … Any memories of when aged 5?
5. Real-time paintings executed from life to coincide with each of the ages represented. One is painted within 5 minutes, another within 15 minutes, and so on. The view to showcase relative significance of time. When one steps from the grip of unpleasant situation: pain, oppressive marriage or job … a backwards glance at this life-time of sorts can now be regarded as a mere blink: a minute of pain can seem to last endlessly, a treasured event can slip by too quickly. Does a 15 year old feel their living to date is as short as someone of 75 might regard it? …

“REAL TIMBER TERRITORY” - Lance Lawrence
Including bowls carved from burls from a range of timbers such as bloodwood, salmon gum and camphor laurel. Hook spears (traditionally used by the ‘Mullumwar’, the tribal executioner), Boomerangs (male), this shape used in traditional ceremony throughout SE Arnhem Land, Number 7 Boomerang (female), powerful role in ceremony, Mugwala - traditional fishing net, coffee tables, music sticks, ‘Credit Managers’- term coined by Lance for male boomerangs fitted into the slab from which they were cut. Businesses around the Territory have purchased these with own logos etc. carved into the slab.
